What To Know Before Visiting Tahiti By Phoenix Delray Tahiti is a beautiful island region, steeped in tradition and culture, and has been a popular getaway travel point for many years. The Tahitian islands are located in an are of the Pacific Ocean known as the Polynesian Triangle, which also includes Hawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealand.

In 1957, all of the Tahitian islands were designated French territory and renamed French Polynesia, and since 1998, French Polynesia has been its own overseas country with self governing powers via an elected assembly and a President.
